These creatures are not brightly colored compared to their counterparts. They have brown body with whitish chest. Their head and throat are deep red and the bill is rather long. The eyes are almond-shaped and dark. Like all birds of their kind they feed on nectar.

The habitat of this species is the northwest of the USA all the way up to Alaska. During the winter months, these creatures can be seen in the southeast regions. There are little breeding surveys done concerning this species. Rufous humming bird chicks are always beautiful in a photo.
