Hummingbirds - Feeding and Care

Hummingbirds are definitely one of the most spectacular and wonderful creatures that are fun to observe. Nowadays, many people realize that they may easily attract these birds to their gardens, which benefits both humans and the species. By following some simple steps, one can easily attract Hummingbirds to gardens and parks and make life much more enjoyable.

Let us remember that the Hummingbird feeds on nectar and occasionally insects found in the flowers. The species uses its long slender bill and sucks the liquid with their long split tongue. Hummingbirds are attracted to bright red, pink, purple, blue, and yellow flowers. If you happen to have trumpet vine honeysuckle, gladiolus, jasmine, or salvia in your yard, you have more chances to make a Hummingbird settle there.

Feeders are becoming very popular nowadays, as they provide food for the species and are like a magnet for Hummingbirds. The substance is usually made of sugar and water that are boiled and cooled. Keep in mind that there should be no honey in the feeder, as the components found in honey are detrimental for the Hummingbird.

The place where you put the feeder also matters. As a rule, the feeder is placed in shaded areas far from electricity sources. It should freely hang from a tree or a specially made stand. Ants can be a problem for feeder owners, yet such simple methods as petroleum jelly can help. Make sure the feeder is always full for Hummingbirds tend to empty it very quickly.
